It may have become a bit of a cliche, but Fable Living was born out of a desire to get out of the London office rat race and do something of my own. The idea came long before my children arrived but now on my second maternity leave, it’s really intensified. I loved the opportunity and buzz working in the ad industry gave me in my twenties: late night parties in the office bar, ad land softball matches in the evening sun in Regent's Park, the ‘thrill’ of a deadline. I really value my time spent doing all those things but as many people end up experiencing, that initial thrill can wane. For me it was a combination of the monotony of the daily tube commute, missing my countryside roots and wanting to feel like what I was spending the majority of my time doing was for me.
I’ve long been interested in home decor and have enjoyed working on interior projects for myself and friends. I’ve also become increasingly conscious of the things I buy. I definitely enjoy the feeling of buying something new and special but have become more and more mindful of where the item comes from, how long will it last, do I really need it? Fable Living is a curation of pieces that aims for you to feel good about your purchase. I wanted to create a place where you could find beautiful items for your home and lifestyle, where the impact has been considered for you. The things I think about when sourcing an item include: will it last?, could it be made from recycled or biodegradable materials?, can it be used over and over and if not, could it be recycled once finished with? Not every item will tick every single box but it will always have a minimum level of sustainability. I try hard not to get caught up by trends. I want items to last a lifetime. But I also really want the pieces to stand out a little more and not fit into that ‘fuzzy eco’ genre. So many makers and designers are thinking about sustainability when they create items nowadays and so ‘eco’ no longer means just hemp fabric and earthy tones. It can also include bold colours, and a bit of sparkle, which is what I want to achieve. Sustainability with a touch of glamour.
So for the past couple of years, alongside my ad land job and bringing up two little humans, I’ve been working on Fable Living. Scouring trade shows and design fairs, as well as hours of online research, to bring together a collection of items I really like and I hope other people will too. As with any business, it’s an ongoing venture with many things to learn along the way. I’m very much a fledgling at the moment, but I’m excited about where it could go. I hope to have you on the journey with me.
